PERSIAN Eye Cohort

The PERSIAN Eye Cohort was designed in an effort to investigate and learn more about the prevalence of eye diseases and their relationship with systemic problems, dietary patterns, geographical and ethnical differences, and to contribute to the general knowledge in the field. The PERSIAN Eye Cohort is carried out in six of the PERSIAN Cohort sites, including Some’e Sara (Guilan), Shabestar (East Azerbaijan), Rafsanjan (Kerman), Zahedan (Sistan and Balouchestan), Ahvaz (Khouzestan), and Yazd (Yazd). All individuals who enroll in the PERSIAN Cohort also take part in the PERSIAN Eye Cohort at these sites. After completing an Eye Questionnaire, participants are visited by a trained optometrist and their refractive errors are evaluated. They are also screened and referred for a complete ophthalmologic exam by an ophthalmologist, in case they meet any of the following criteria: history of diabetes, risk factors for glaucoma or retinal diseases, strabismus, significant visual deficit or any other suspicious finding. For a more objective recording—to be evaluated later in central reading centers—imaging studies such as fundus photography, and slit photos are performed for all individuals.

General Objectives of the Cohort are as followed:

  1. To determine the prevalence of eye diseases such as refractive errors, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, age-related retinal degeneration, glaucoma, and strabismus in different regions of Iran and indifferent ethnicities
  2. To determine the degree to which eye disorders affect individuals’ general health and wellbeing.
